Bob Russell says millions of people in the UK cannot afford to take even a short holiday The holidays of millions of Britons should be subsidised by the government, an MP says.
Liberal Democrat Bob Russell says it will have social benefits for many low-income families and pensioners.
He claims people from these social groups have not got enough money to afford regular getaways in the UK, or even day trips.
The Department for Culture, Media and Sport said it did not want to comment on Mr Russell's statement.
Mr Russell told the Commons many are missing out, with some 7m people in the UK unable to afford holidays.
He said: "More than 1.5m families cannot even afford a day trip.
"Of course, I'm not talking about holidays that some people - I exclude myself from this - have, sipping cocktails by the pool under a Caribbean sun, but simple off-peak breaks here at home.
"More Skegness or Sheringham, than Spain or Seychelles."
