Woman's body found on waste land

Police are treating as suspicious the death of a woman whose body was found on a patch of waste ground in North Lanarkshire.

The discovery was made at about 0745 GMT by a man walking his dog near Moss Side Avenue in Airdrie.

Strathclyde officers have said a post mortem examination would be carried out to determine the cause of death

They added that they have yet to identify the woman and their enquiries were at an early stage.

The officer in charge of the investigation, Det Supt Alan Buchanan, said: "From our initial enquiries, we believe the body has been lying since yesterday evening, therefore, at this stage, I would appeal to anyone who was in this area from yesterday afternoon onwards and saw or heard anything suspicious to contact us.

"This is an area of extensive park land which is popular with dog walkers and is generally fairly busy throughout the day; therefore someone may have unwittingly seen or heard something that may be of importance to this enquiry."
